The government has opened a consultation on the proposed new statutory right for paid time off for bereaved parents.

The proposals say the leave will be designed to ensure that all bereaved parents can take some time away from work to grieve for a lost child.

With cross-party support for the proposals, they are likely to succeed in becoming law, although there is no implementation date as yet.

Views are currently sought on the mechanics of the leave, including:

  • the definition of a bereaved parent
  • how and when to take the proposed 2 weeks’ leave
  • notice and evidence requirements
